July 2 - (The Insurer) - Insured costs from extreme weather events that affected Australia in the first half of 2025 have now exceeded A$1.8 billion ($1.18 billion), the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) said on Wednesday.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred has been the most costly event of the year so far, with more than 125,000 claims exceeding A$1.36 billion.
Mid-North Coast and Hunter floods in May contributed to $200 million in insured losses across 11,500 claims, while February's North Queensland floods hit A$274 million across 11,000 claims.
ICA director of mitigation and extreme weather response, Liam Walter, said: "While this damage bill isn’t as severe as first expected, we acknowledge that for many communities, recovery is still very much ongoing and there is still a long road ahead."
Walter added that the ICA is also closely monitoring the weather event that’s unfolding in New South Wales.
