May 1 - (The Insurer) - Jessica Wong, CFO of Beazley Furlonge Limited, has spoken about the transformative journey of discovering her unique management style and overcoming challenges associated with being an introvert in a leadership role.
Speaking to The Insurer TV as part of a wider series with the Lloyd's Market Association profiling senior women in the industry, Wong candidly discussed her path to self-discovery, emphasising the importance of embracing one's strengths and the power of mentorship.
Reflecting on her career trajectory, Wong described her early years at PwC and Aviva as an "exploration phase", during which she honed her technical expertise in finance and insurance.
It was at Beazley, however, that her leadership journey truly began when she transitioned from managing a small team to leading a global function of more than 50 people.
But this leap was not without its hurdles. Wong admitted the difficulty of adjusting to a senior leadership role, particularly as an introvert.
"It was really, really hard, very challenging," she stated, emphasising her initial struggles with public speaking and communication. Yet, through self-discovery and support from mentors and colleagues, Wong learned to embrace her natural strengths, such as deep listening and emotional intelligence.
Wong's leadership style evolved to focus on empowerment and creating an inclusive culture.
"Being kind and caring and empathetic means that you need to make sure you understand what the purpose is that you're doing," she explained, highlighting the importance of setting clear expectations and fostering a safe environment for her team.
Her journey underscores the significance of mentorship in professional growth. Wong praised the role of mentors in challenging and supporting her, while also acknowledging the reciprocal learning she gained from being a mentor herself.
"Perfection is the enemy of growth," she advised, encouraging aspiring female leaders to focus on their superpowers rather than perceived shortcomings.
Looking to the future, Wong is optimistic about the evolving role of women in leadership.
She advocates for sustainable pathways and real opportunities for women to step into senior roles, emphasising the need for collective efforts to drive gender equality.
"It's really for each of us to think about … what are the things that each of us can do in our own way to help set the path forward?" she urged.
