TradingKey - Japan may impose retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. This week's negotiations are the center of global attention.
On Wednesday, April 16, Japan and the U.S. are scheduled to hold trade talks, with global markets closely watching the outcome . However, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has made it clear that Japan does not intend to make major concessions and is in no rush to finalise a deal.
Recently, President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of "reciprocal tariffs" for several countries, including Japan, in an effort to create space for negotiations. Trump claimed that many countries are eager to strike agreements with the U.S., stating that several foreign leaders had contacted him, saying, "Sir, please let me make a deal. I am willing to do anything."
Despite this move, Trump also issued a warning: if countries fail to reach agreements within the 90-day window, he may revoke the suspension and impose even higher tariffs.
While China has already responded to Trump's tariff policies with multiple rounds of retaliatory tariffs, Japan is now taking a more assertive stance. Ishiba stated in a parliamentary session, "I do not believe we should make significant concessions just to quickly end negotiations."
