Markel bolsters wholesale claims unit with Thomas as marine lead

March 25 - (The Insurer) - Markel has named Dan Thomas marine technical claims lead as part of a series of senior appointments intended to strengthen the carrier’s wholesale claims service.
Thomas joins Markel from Helvetia Global Solutions UK, where he served as head of marine claims. Prior to this, Thomas worked for QBE European Operations/British Marine and Steamship Mutual P&I Club.
Based at Markel’s London office, Thomas will report to Tim Warren, claims manager for marine liability.
In addition, Markel has promoted Debbie Larkin to claims manager, energy, liability and terrorism, effective March 31. In this role, she will be responsible for upstream, midstream and downstream energy claims, along with claims from Markel’s sustainable energy, conventional power and terrorism portfolios.
Rachel Tighe has been promoted to professional indemnity claims manager, effective immediately.
The third promotion is Natalie Myhill, who will assume the role of claims manager, financial institutions.
In addition to their day-to-day responsibilities, Myhill and Tighe are co-founders of Markel and DAC Beachcroft’s joint initiative ‘Mentoring the Market’, which was launched five years ago to support knowledge transfer and professional development among claims and legal professionals within the insurance sphere.
Based at Markel’s London office, Tighe and Myhill will report to Jonathan Pestell, head of claims, specialty. Larkin will be managed by Thomas Upton, head of claims, marine, energy and casualty at Markel.
