Ukraine's sovereign debt tumbles, investor ceasefire optimism fades

ReutersFeb 20, 2025 9:04 AM

- Ukraine's sovereign debt slid lower on Thursday, with most issues on track for their fifth straight day of losses, as tensions mounted between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The country's GDP warrant shed 2 cents, to be bid at 81.05 cents, while the 2035 maturity bond lost 2.4 cents to be bid at 63 cents.

On Wednesday, Trump called Zelenskiy a "dictator" and warned he had to move quickly to secure peace or risk losing his country, casting doubt on whether a Trump-negotiated ceasefire with Russia would benefit Ukraine.

Prior to this week, the bonds had notched impressive gains, driven by optimism that a ceasefire deal could boost Ukraine's economic growth in the coming years.
