Russian rouble regains some ground against US dollar

ReutersApr 8, 2025 9:19 AM

- The Russian rouble regained some ground against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, supported by increased foreign currency sales by the central bank as oil prices climbed back after U.S. tariff-driven selloff.

By 0910 GMT, the rouble RUB= was up 1.1% at 85.20 against the dollar in the over-the-counter market. The Russian currency is up about 24% against the dollar this year, mostly on expectations of easing geopolitical tensions.

Russia's economy, mainly insulated from Western markets by sanctions, has escaped immediate damage from U.S. tariffs but the Kremlin said on April 4 it needs to take extra measures to minimise the impact of resulting market turbulence.

A sharp drop in global oil prices triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs poses a risk to the Russian economy, the central bank's governor Elvira Nabiullina said on Tuesday.

Against the Chinese yuan, the most traded foreign currency in Russia, the rouble was also up by 0.4% at 11.54 on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
