Fed's Hammack says restrictive monetary policy needed to quash inflation

ReutersSep 29, 2025 12:23 PM

- Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack said Monday inflation risks outweigh those of nascent job market fragility and indicate a need to keep interest rates up to bring price pressures to heel.

Inflation “continues to be the bigger concern” when it comes to the Fed’s two mandates and price pressures are "headed in the wrong direction,” Hammack said at a conference held by the European Central Bank. “I think we need to maintain a restrictive stance of policy to ensure that we can bring inflation back to our target,” she said, suggesting she opposes any further push by the central bank to cut interest rates.
