China's May exports miss expectations, imports widen declines

ReutersJun 9, 2025 3:14 AM

- China's exports expanded 4.8% year-on-year in value terms in May, and imports dropped 3.4%, customs data showed on Monday, as trade tensions remain high between Beijing and Washington.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 5.0% expansion in exports and a 0.9% drop in imports.

Exports had jumped 8.1% year-on-year in April despite U.S. President Donald Trump's 145% tariff on Chinese goods taking effect that month, and imports that month also beat expectations with a 0.2% dip.

Most of those levies, along with China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, were suspended in mid-May for 90 days after the two countries held talks in Geneva.

The two powers are still locked in disputes over key trade issues such as China's rare earth export curbs and U.S. control of chip-related exports to China, and their top leaders have agreed to further talks.
