Germany's Left party would support debt brake reform - with conditions

- Leaders of Germany's far-left Left party said on Monday that they supported a reform of the country's debt brake but would condition their backing, noting they would object to rearmament.

The Left party, together with the far-right Alternative for Germany, on Sunday jointly secured one third of seats in the new parliament that is required to block changes to the constitution, including a loosening of the country's debt brake.

Speaking to a news conference in Berlin, party leaders said they had always objected to the brake, which limits the federal government's budget deficit to a mere 0.35% of output and has been blamed for dampening much-needed investment in Europe's largest economy.

"We have to invest in social infrastructure, and if that doesn't happen, then we won't vote for it either," said party co-chief Ines Schwerdtner. "We will not vote for rearmament."
