Watch: Trailer for Shrek 5 has dropped and fans are just counting down the days

Once upon a time i.e 2001, in a place called Far Far Away, a loudmouth donkey met a terrifying ogre who, it transpired, had deep emotional layers (like an onion) and together they set out to rescue a princess in distress, and the rest is movie magic history.

Four films later, and having conquered wicked fairy godmothers, not-so-charming princes, and sneaky imps, not to mention the burden of celebrity, Shrek and Donkey are ready for their next adventure.

The blockbuster franchise remains one of the most influential animated series of all time and has collected numerous awards including the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature, as well as spawning two spin-off films in Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2011.

Little wonder then that fans are ecstatic to learn that a new Shrek film is finally on the way and this week they have given us a sneak peak.

Dreamworks have kept the trailer short and sweet, with a few modern twists - a mirror that you can swipe left or right on (sound familiar?). Oh, and by the way, Shrek's kids are all grown up

The storyline is not known yet, but the film company has revealed that most of the main players are returning, including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, but one name was curiously left off the list.

There was no mention in the announcement as to whether Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as the swashbuckling, boot aficionado lothario Puss in Boots and it's hard to imagine a Shrek film without him!

Fans were stunned to see Banderas' name not appear on the cast list with one repeatedly writing: why didn't you say Antonio Banderas?

What we do know is that the film will be directed by Walt Dohrn who previously provided the voice of Rumplestilskin in Shrek Forever After.

Elsewhere Eddie Murphy confirmed that he started working on the project 'months ago' and also told Collider that plans were also in the works for a spinoff Donkey film.

'I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie.

'We're gonna do Donkey. So we're gonna do a Shrek and a Donkey film,' he told the outlet.

DreamWorks also revealed the release date of the film, which will land in cinemas Christmas 2026
