FRANKFURT, May 4 (Reuters) - Germany's finance minister said on Monday the European Union does not want an escalation of the trade conflict with the United States, but that it is united and prepared to react to any new tariffs.
"We don't want an escalation, we want to agree on a common path with the Americans, but we in Europe are also prepared and closely coordinated," Lars Klingbeil said ahead of a meeting of EU finance ministers in Brussels.
"We have seen in the Greenland question that it's good when we Europeans are prepared and united," he added.
President Donald Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on imported European cars to 25% from the 15% levy previously agreed.
