ATHENS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Greece's Souda naval base on the island of Crete, a strategic facility for Greece, the United States and the NATO military alliance in the eastern Mediterranean, has tightened security as part of an emergency alert after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, sources said.
Only security and essential personnel will be allowed in, said one of the sources with knowledge of the issue, adding that air defence measures have been activated.
Last week, the U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford stopped at Souda to resupply and refuel before heading to the eastern Mediterranean.
