CHICAGO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Basis bids for hard red winter (HRW) wheat were steady to firmer in the southern U.S. Plains on Tuesday and cash trade was quiet as K.C. HRW futures hovered near contract lows and farmers focused on harvesting corn, sorghum and soybeans, dealers said.
The wheat basis firmed by 5 cents a bushel at Catoosa, Oklahoma.
Protein premiums for railcar HRW wheat to and through Kansas City rose by 2 cents a bushel for wheat with 12.4% through 12.8% protein. Premiums for other grades were unchanged. KCBT/SCA
Growers continued to plant the 2026 winter wheat crop.
Despite showers in parts of the region in the last day, topsoil in parts of central Oklahoma is dry and newly planted wheat needs moisture, one merchandiser said.
The crop was 50% planted nationally, according to analysts, though weekly U.S. Department of Agriculture data was not published on Monday due to a partial government shutdown.
K.C. December hard red winter wheat KWZ25 futures settled down 3-1/2 cents at $4.92 a bushel but stayed above a life-of-contract low set last week at $4.88.
