CHICAGO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Spot basis bids for soybeans were steady-to-stronger at soy processing facilities and river elevators in the U.S. Midwest on Tuesday, spot checks showed, while a round of showers briefly interrupted the ongoing harvest.
The soybean basis improved by 5 cents a bushel at crushing sites in Lafayette and Morristown, Indiana, and by 3 cents at Davenport, Iowa, where grain is loaded onto barges for shipment on the Mississippi River toward Gulf exporters.
Corn basis bids were mixed. The basis fell by 13 cents a bushel at Decatur, Illinois, a processing hub, and by 7 cents at a Linden, Indiana, ethanol plant.
But, the basis improved by a few cents at an Annawan, Illinois, ethanol site, at a Cincinnati, Ohio, terminal elevator and at Midwest river elevators, reflecting cheaper barge freight costs.
While the harvest of both crops has been expanding, some producers are expected to store their grain and hold out for higher prices.
The U.S. soybean harvest was 39% complete and the corn harvest was 29% complete by Sunday, according to analysts, though weekly U.S. Department of Agriculture data was not published on Monday due to a partial government shutdown.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is set to announce a plan this week worth as much as $15 billion to bail out U.S. farmers hurt by trade tensions that have curbed soybean export sales.
At mid-session, Chicago Board of Trade December corn futures CZ25 were down 1-1/2 cents at $4.20-1/4 per bushel while November soybean futures SX25 were up 3 cents at $10.20-3/4 a bushel. GRA/
