July 14 - (The Insurer) - Guy Carpenter has appointed Richard Hakes as its global head of marine, energy and technical lines (METL), the reinsurance broker confirmed to The Insurer.
He will join the global specialties leadership team and report to James Boyce, CEO of global specialties.
The wider METL leadership team will comprise Simon Liley as deputy global head of METL, alongside Brian Stroop as global specialties leader for North America and head of U.S. METL.
Nick Jay has been appointed chairman of METL, Guy Carpenter added.
In his new role, Hakes will be responsible for leading the global METL team.
Hakes has been with Guy Carpenter for 13 years, previously serving as head of its international marine business.
Before that he spent almost seven years at Cooper Gay, including as commercial director and in an Asia Pacific-focused marine and energy treaty position.
Hakes' appointment has filled the vacancy left by Jim Summers, who this publication exclusively reported in June had resigned alongside at least five senior team members to join Willis Re. Guy Carpenter subsequently launched legal action against Willis Re and several senior group executives with regards to this and attempted hires from its Bermuda operations.
