EUROPE POWER-Spot prices tumble on soaring wind supply

ReutersJan 22, 2025 9:58 AM

- European spot power prices for Thursday fell sharply on Wednesday as wind power supply was expected to more than double in Germany and rise throughout the region.

The German baseload power for Thursday TRDEBD1 was down 31.1% at 109 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) at 0943 GMT.

French day-ahead TRFRBD1 power fell 20.6% to 112.50 euros.

German wind power output was expected to jump 19.6 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday to 33.2 GW, while wind supply in France is expected to go up 3 GW to 8.2 GW, LSEG data showed.

German solar production, however, was due to fall 1.7 GW to 1.6 GW, the data showed.

Shares in European wind power companies fell on Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump suspended offshore leasing for wind on his first day in office, adding to the pain in an industry that had turned to the U.S. to help revive its fortunes.

Thursday's outlook is dominated by rising wind power supplies in Germany and the rest of the region, with the fundamental change adding bearish pressure and reducing residual load in all countries, said LSEG analyst Riccardo Parviero.

Power consumption in Germany is expected to shed 380 megawatts (MW) to 64.3 GW on Thursday, while in France it was seen falling by 670 MW to 67 GW, LSEG data showed.

German year-ahead baseload TRDEBYZ6 was down 2% at 953.50 euros/MWh, while the French 2026 baseload contract TRFRBYZ6 ticked down 0.5% to 68.50 euros.

The coming two weeks look quite mild in the Nordic area, but prospects of calmer weather at the end of the month are a bullish signal for the German forward curve, analysts at Energi Danmark said.

Benchmark European carbon permits CFI2Zc1 were 1.8% down at 78.81 euros per metric ton.
