EUROPE BEFORE THE BELL: STOCKS HEAD FOR SMALL LIFT

European stocks are heading for a small lift at the open, buoyed by some optimism around talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Euro STOXX 50 futures STXEc1 are up 0.2%, as are FTSE FFIc1 futures while futures on the DAX FDXc1 are rising 0.1%.

Trump told Zelenskiy on Monday that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear.

In company news, Italy's merchant bank Mediobanca MDBI.MI received European Central Bank approval on Monday to buy private bank Banca Generali BGN.MI and create Italy's second-largest wealth manager, as it seeks to thwart a takeover bid from Monte dei Paschi di Siena BMPS.MI.

Markets are looking ahead to the Federal Reserve's annual gathering on Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for more hints around the outlook for Fed policy.
