U.S. STOCKS MIXED AS THEY SORT OUT INFLATION DATA, EARNINGS

The Nasdaq .IXIC and the S&P 500 index .SPX are higher, and the Dow .DJI is lower early on Tuesday after fresh inflation data, while banking heavyweights kicked off the second-quarter earnings season.

A Labor Department report showed U.S. consumer prices rose as expected on a monthly basis in June. Annually, the prices rose 2.7%, compared with an estimated 2.6% rise.

The core figures, which exclude volatile food and energy components, rose 0.2% on a monthly basis and 2.9% from a year earlier, but the gains were below estimates.

Wall Street kick-started another earnings season with major financial institutions reporting results including JPMorgan Chase's JPM.N, Wells Fargo's WFC.N, and Citigroup C.N.

In response, the S&P 500 banks index .SPXBK is down around 1%.

Nvidia NVDA.O is rising on news it's filing applications with the U.S. government to resume sales to China of H20 graphics processing units, and it expects to get licenses soon. Chip stocks .SOX, with a gain of around 2%, are among outperformers.

Meanwhile, although the S&P 500 index .SPX is modestly higher on the day at around 6,282, it continues to struggle to overwhelm a long-term resistance line, which resides around 6,280 on a monthly basis.
