BEARISH SENTIMENT INCREASES: AAII SURVEY
Pessimism among individual investors over the short-term outlook for U.S. stocks rose in the latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey. With this, both optimism and neutral sentiment fell.
According to the latest data, bearish sentiment rose to 41.4% in the week ended June 18. This shot up from 33.6% in the previous week but was an identical reading to the week before that, ended on Jun 4. The latest reading was well above the historical average of 31.0%.
Meanwhile bullish sentiment dropped to 33.2% from 36.7% in the prior week but was slightly higher than the 32.7% reading for bullishness in the week ended June 4. The latest week was below the historical average of 37.5%.
As for neutral sentiment, it slipped to 25.4% this week from 29.7% in the prior week. It was only slightly below the 25.9% reading in the earliest June survey. The historical average for neutral sentiment is 31.5%
The survey's special question for the week also reflected some investor jitters. Asked if they think investors are too bullish or two bearish right now, these are the responses:
More than 48% say that investors are too bullish.
Just above 23% say that sentiment toward the market is about right.
Here is a snapshot of survey results:
