CANADA STOCKS-TSX futures rise ahead of Fed rate decision

ReutersJun 18, 2025 11:10 AM

- Futures linked to Canada's main stock index rose on Wednesday, recovering from the previous session's losses, as investors awaited a crucial interest rate decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve, due later in the day.

June futures on the S&P/TSX index SXFcv1 were up 0.3% at 06:50 a.m. ET (10:50 GMT).

The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged in its monetary policy decision, with investors closely watching policymakers' comments to gauge how the U.S. central bank intends to navigate an uncertain trade environment.

With conflict escalating in the oil-rich Middle East, investors also pondered the possibility of a more direct U.S. military involvement in the Israel-Iran aerial war.

Meanwhile, the Group of Seven nations meeting ended with the members struggling to find unity over the conflict in Ukraine while Canada promised more aid to the country.

Earlier this week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump that their two nations should try to wrap up a new economic and security deal within 30 days.

Carney also invited non-G7 members Mexico, India, Australia, South Africa, South Korea and Brazil, as he tries to shore up alliances elsewhere and diversify Canada's exports away from the United States.

In commodities, oil prices LCOc1, CLc1 declined after surging 4% in the previous session, while gold XAU= eased and copper steadied.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index .GSPTSE fell on Tuesday, as investors' worries over the ripple effect of the Israel-Iran conflict pushed up energy shares, leaving other sectors lagging.
