EUROPE BEFORE THE BELL: FUTURES RETREAT

European equity futures are signalling a soft open on Tuesday, retracing some of the previous day's firm gains after a report suggested the U.S. could go softer on tariffs.

The report was denied by incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, leaving his tariff plans still highly uncertain.

Euro STOXX 50 futures STXEc1 are down 0.5%, after the index rose over 2% on Monday.

Futures on Germany's DAX FDXc1, France's CAC 40 FCEc1 and Britain's FTSE 100 FFIc1 are down 0.4%-0.6%.

In corporate news, Next NXT.L shares could be in focus, after the British retailer raised its forecast again after a strong Christmas.

Looking ahead, focus today is likely to fall on euro zone consumer price inflation data later in the session after recent upside surprises in both Spanish and German December figures.

The figures are the last major inflation data before the ECB's Jan. 30 policy announcement.
