Trump says he thinks Belarus will release many political prisoners
WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he believes Belarus will be releasing many of the hundreds of political prisoners it is holding.
Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, said he had talked about the issue with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, whom he called "a very respected man." Belarus is believed to be holding about 1,400 political prisoners.
"I believe they're going to be releasing a lot of those 1,400," Trump said, saying it could happen "in the pretty near future."
