US citizen killed in funicular derailment in Lisbon, State Dept. says
WASHINGTON, Sept 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. citizen was among those killed in a funicular derailment in Lisbon, the State Department said on Thursday.
"Our staff in Lisbon and here in the United States are working tirelessly to provide consular assistance to the victim and their family," the department said in a statement.
Portuguese authorities were investigating what caused a Lisbon funicular railway popular with tourists to hurtle down a hill, killing at least 16 people and injuring 22.
