Twice champion Venus Williams suffered a first-round exit after falling to Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova 6-3 2-6 6-1.
On the men's side, Norwegian 12th seed and 2022 runner-up Casper Ruud advanced after 6-1 6-2 7-6(5) win over Austrian Sebastian Ofner.
2004 DRAPER OVERCOMES GOMEZ
Britain's Jack Draper made a strong start to his U.S. Open run, defeating Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 6-4 7-5 6-7(7) 6-2 in the opening round despite a slip in the third set.
