White House defends federal takeover of police in Washington

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The White House defended U.S. President Donald Trump's federal takeover of the police in Washington, D.C. and criticized Democrats after the city's attorney general filed a lawsuit earlier on Friday.

"The Trump Administration has the lawful authority to assert control over the D.C. Police, which is necessary due to the emergency that has arisen in our Nation’s Capital as a result of failed leadership," White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement.
