SINTRA, Portugal, July 1 (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, asked whether President Donald Trump's personal attacks make his job harder, on Tuesday said he was "100%" focused on delivering on the Fed's congressional mandates, earning applause from his fellow central bankers.
At a European Central Bank event in Portugal, Powell was asked: "You get attacked by the president a lot on a personal basis. Does it make your job harder?"
"I'm very focused on just doing my job," Powell responded. "The things that matter are using our tools to achieve the goals that Congress has given us: maximum employment, price stability, financial stability. And that's what we focus on, 100%."
The audience and others on the panel including ECB President Christine Lagarde responded with applause.
Asked later if he would remain at the Fed after his term as Chair expires next May, Powell said: "I have nothing for you on that today."
