CANADA FX DEBT - Canadian dollar strengthens, benchmark yield climbs

The Canadian dollar strengthened against the greenback on Monday, and the yield on benchmark government debt climbed.

The loonie CAD= was trading 0.2% higher at C$1.3557 to the greenback, or 73.76 U.S. cents, after trading in a range of 1.3559 to 1.3607.

Canadian government 10-year bond yields CA10YT=RR rose 0.2 basis points to 3.376%. The yield on similar U.S. government benchmark debt rose to 4.4264%.

U.S. July crude CLc1 futures fell $1.26 to $71.72 a barrel on Monday.

Canadian housing starts in Mayfell, but less than expected, to 279,500 units from a revised 280,200 units the previous month, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said.

A survey of 10 economists polled by Reuters had forecast May housing starts falling to 245,000 units.
