Feb 16 (Reuters) - French oil producer Maurel & Prom MAUP.PA on Monday welcomed measures by the United States government to allow some companies to resume oil and gas operations in Venezuela, and said it was hoping to obtain a similar authorisation as soon as possible.
The U.S. issued two general licenses on Friday giving major energy companies the scope to operate in Venezuela, which is an OPEC member state, thereby paving the way for investments in the most significant relaxation of sanctions on Venezuela since U.S. forces captured and removed President Nicolas Maduro last month.
Maurel & Prom said in a statement this was a "constructive step."
"A stable and predictable environment will contribute to unlocking value for all stakeholders," it added.
The company said its activities on the Urdaneta Oeste field, in which its unit M&P Iberoamerica holds a 40% working interest, are running satisfactorily, and that it is ready for the next phase of field redevelopment once an authorisation is issued.
