CBOT Trends-Wheat down 5-7 cents, corn down 1-2, soybeans down 5-8

- The following are U.S. expectations for the resumption of grain and soy complex trading at the Chicago Board of Trade at 8:30 a.m. CST (1430 GMT) on Friday:

WHEAT - Down 5 to 7 cents per bushel

  • CBOT wheat fell back after jumping to multi-month highs on investor short-covering. GRA/

  • Managed commodity funds hold a large net short position in CBOT wheat futures, leaving the market prone to short-covering rallies. GRA/

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture said net U.S. wheat export sales for the week ended February 5 totaled 501,900 metric tons for the 2025/2026 marketing year, which was on the higher end of trade estimates.

  • March soft red winter wheat WH26 was last down 5-1/2 cents at $5.47 per bushel. K.C. March hard red winter wheat KWH26 was last down 7-1/4 cents at $5.46-3/4 per bushel and Minneapolis March spring wheat MWEH26 was down 3 cents at $5.74-1/2 per bushel.

CORN - Down 1 to 2 cents per bushel

  • CBOT corn futures Cv1 fell amid weakness in crude oil and a consolidating dollar, which tends to make U.S. exports less competitive on the global market. GRA/

  • A rise in the dollar index =USD, ahead of closely tracked U.S. inflation data, and a fall in crude oil encouraged grain markets to pause. MKTS/GLOB

  • The USDA reported net weekly corn export sales at 2,069,600 tons, surpassing trade estimates.

  • CBOT March corn CH26 was last down 1 cent at $4.30-1/4 per bushel.

SOYBEANS - Down 5 to 8 cents per bushel

  • Soybeans paused after shooting up Thursday, driven by market expectations of increased Chinese demand for U.S. soy.

  • A report in the South China Morning Post on Wednesday said that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could extend their countries' trade truce for as long as a year, supporting soybean futures.

  • China is the world's largest soybean buyer.

  • The arrival of a bumper Brazilian harvest remained a curb on the market.

  • Brazil's crop agency Conab and the U.S. Department of Agriculture both raised their forecasts for Brazil's new soy crop to record levels this week.

  • CBOT March soybeans SH26 were down 7-1/2 cents at $11.29-3/4 per bushel.
