CBOT corn mixed as Brazilian corn crop looms

ReutersMay 6, 2025 6:38 PM

- Chicago Board of Trade corn futures were mixed on Tuesday as steady planting progress in the U.S. and Brazil's upcoming harvest added pressure to prices.

  • Favorable harvest prospects in Brazil are countering support from brisk U.S. exports.

  • Brazil's large safrinha corn crop will be harvested in the coming months, which will diminish global demand for U.S. corn.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday reported the U.S. corn crop was 40% planted as of Saturday, up from 24% the previous week and ahead of the five-year average of 39%, but short of analysts' average estimate of 41% complete.

  • Rains also crossed the eastern Midwest last week from southern Missouri through Ohio, slowing field work in some areas, but overall planting progress for corn and soybeans remained ahead of normal. The U.S. is the world's largest corn exporter.

  • CBOT July corn CN25 closed up 1-1/4 cents at $4.55-1/2 per bushel.
