MetaTrader 4 (MT4)
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is a trading platform created by MetaQuotes in 2005. While it is primarily linked to forex trading, MT4 can also be utilized for trading various other markets beyond forex.
Similar to most online trading platforms, MT4 enables traders to view charts, access live price streams, and execute orders with their brokers. Its popularity stems from its high level of customization, allowing users to tailor the platform to their specific trading preferences.
Additionally, MT4 supports automated trading through algorithms that can open and close trades based on predefined parameters. The software is licensed to forex brokers, who then offer it to their clients.
The platform consists of both client and server components. The broker operates the server component, while the client software is provided to customers, enabling them to view live prices and charts, place orders, and manage their accounts. The client application is designed for Microsoft Windows and gained popularity due to the ability for users to create their own trading scripts and robots for automation.
Although there is no official version of MT4 for Mac OS, some brokers offer their own customized variants for Mac users. In 2010, MetaQuotes introduced MetaTrader 5 (MT5) as a successor, maintaining much of the original structure.
