TradingKey – Elon Musk's xAI recently released the Grok 3 model, which is being hailed as the "smartest AI on earth." However, the subscription prices for using it have also doubled, in sharp contrast to the free usage of the Chinese model DeepSeek.
After the release of Grok 3 on February 18th, Musk's social media platform, X, announced the latest subscription price list. The current Premium+ subscription price in the US market has risen from $22 per month to $40 per month, nearly doubling.
It has been less than two months since the last price increase. At the end of December 2024, the Premium+ subscription fee was raised from $16 to $22 per month.
Reports suggest that the Grok 3 model outperforms other popular models, such as DeepSeek, ChatGPT, and Gemini, in testing performance, particularly in mathematics, science, and coding capabilities. This model, trained with 200,000 GPUs, is currently available to Premium+ users on X.
The actual usage experience of the Grok 3 model is still to be further evaluated by more professionals and users. However, Musk's decision to significantly increase prices in such a short period has sparked controversy.
In contrast, the DeepSeek model, which is open-source, has low-cost training, and is free to use, has intensified the US-China tech war. Meanwhile, Musk's Grok 3 model remains closed-source and GPU-intensive, with no apparent performance gap to justify the higher subscription fees.
A tech blogger commented that this so-called "strongest AI model on earth" is disappointing. "To put it bluntly, it's environmental pollution and a waste of resources."
