TradingKey – Anthropic, an AI startup backed by Amazon, is reportedly seeking to raise $2 billion, with a valuation climbing to $60 billion—further narrowing the gap with OpenAI.

On Tuesday, January 7, sources revealed that Anthropic was in negotiations for a $2 billion funding round led by venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners. This development highlights Anthropic’s rapid rise as a competitor in the AI landscape.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI members, Anthropic is a U.S.-based AI startup and public welfare company focused on developing advanced general AI systems and language models. In March 2023, the company launched Claude, an AI interaction system akin to ChatGPT, and has since introduced iterative updates. By June 2024, Anthropic unveiled its latest AI model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet.

Over the years, Anthropic has secured significant backing from major players like Google and Amazon. Notably, Amazon, Anthropic’s largest investor, has partnered with the startup to enable the Claude 3 Sonnet model to operate on Amazon Bedrock, while AWS provides critical cloud infrastructure.

Although Anthropic has made remarkable progress in just three years, it remains a challenge to surpass OpenAI’s dominance in the short term. OpenAI, established in 2015, has a stronghold in the AI industry with groundbreaking products like ChatGPT and Sora. Its latest funding round in October 2024 raised $6.6 billion, boosting its valuation to over $150 billion.

As Anthropic continues to grow and attract investors, the race to lead the AI sector intensifies.
