TradingKey – The U.S. steel and aluminum tariff hike officially takes effect today, though President Trump may still make last-minute adjustments.

At 12:01 AM ET on June 4, the new U.S. tariff on steel and aluminum exports officially went into effect, imposing a 50% duty on all related imports.

On May 30, President Trump announced that tariffs on imported steel and aluminum would double—from 25% to 50%—effective June 4.

As the deadline approached, the White House urged trade negotiators from affected nations to submit proposals, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirming the administration’s stance.

While Tuesday’s White House statement reaffirmed the tariff implementation, there remains uncertainty over potential changes, given Trump’s history of abrupt shifts in tariff policy. For example, Trump initially declared a global reciprocal tariff system, only to postpone it by 90 days soon after.
