Today’s Market Recap: U.S. Stocks Fall as Iran Talks Stall; Nvidia Gains 2%, AMD Slides, Boeing Sinks 7%
U.S. stocks fell broadly as stalled U.S.-Iran talks drove oil prices and Treasury yields higher, with the 10-year yield reaching its highest level since 2007, while precious metals dropped sharply. Major indices declined, pressured by weakness in semiconductor and aerospace stocks like Boeing. Conversely, Nvidia bucked the trend, gaining on a record $150 billion share-repurchase authorization and an AI safety platform launch. In corporate developments, AMD agreed to acquire World Labs for $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction to expand its spatial AI capabilities, and SpaceX successfully achieved its first orbital insertion during a Starship test flight.

Tracking the Market Trend
TradingKey - U.S. stocks fell as stalled U.S.-Iran talks pushed oil prices and Treasury yields higher. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite dropped to their lowest levels in more than a week, while the Dow approached a three-month low.
Boeing (BA) slid nearly 7% on delays to the 737 MAX 10 certification, making it the Dow’s worst performer.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.67% to 51,481.51; the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.92% to 26,820.38; and the S&P 500 dropped 0.77% to 7,683.69.
AI and semiconductor stocks broadly retreated, while Nvidia and cybersecurity shares bucked the trend. Meta (META) fell 4.79%, Arm (ARM) lost 8.70%, Intel (INTC) declined 5.67%, and Coherent (COHR) dropped about 4.5%.
Nvidia (NVDA) gained about 2%, supported by an additional $150 billion share-repurchase authorization and the launch of its AI agent safety platform. Palo Alto Networks (PANW) rose about 4.6%.
U.S. Treasurys extended their selloff, sending the 10-year yield to its highest level since 2007. The 10-year yield climbed to about 5.24%, while the two-year yield approached 4.92%. Short-term yields pared some of their gains after reports that Washington could ease certain sanctions in exchange for concessions from Iran over its nuclear program.
Crude oil retreated from its intraday highs as traders weighed the diplomatic deadlock against the prospect of sanctions relief. Oil prices surged more than 5% after President Trump rejected Iran’s proposal, but gains narrowed following reports of continued Qatari mediation and possible U.S. sanctions relief. Crude ultimately closed modestly higher.
A stronger dollar and rising Treasury yields weighed heavily on precious metals. Gold fell more than 4% intraday, while COMEX gold futures settled about 3.5% lower. Silver futures lost nearly 5%, leaving both metals at their lowest levels in roughly eight weeks.
Market Headline
Nvidia added $150 billion to its share-repurchase authorization, setting a record for the largest single buyback authorization increase by a U.S. company. The increase brought the remaining authorization under Nvidia’s existing program to $235 billion, which is expected to run through the end of fiscal 2028. The additional amount exceeds Apple’s $110 billion authorization announced in 2024. Nvidia said the decision reflected its confidence in the long-term prospects for AI and accelerated computing, although the timing and volume of actual repurchases will depend on market conditions and capital-allocation priorities.
Nvidia launched the Open Agent Safety Platform to provide independent access controls and security monitoring for AI agents. The platform combines OpenShell, an open-source secure runtime, with the NVIDIA Sentry reference system design. OpenShell uses sandboxes, access controls and runtime policies to restrict agent behavior, while Sentry employs independent telemetry and hardware-level security mechanisms to detect abnormal activity and quarantine agents within milliseconds. Nvidia cited recent incidents involving AI agents bypassing security boundaries to highlight the need for stronger runtime monitoring. There is no evidence that the platform was deployed during the OpenAI and Hugging Face incident in July.
AMD agreed to acquire spatial-intelligence company World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion, expanding its presence in physical AI. Founded by Fei-Fei Li and others, World Labs develops technologies for 3D environment generation, spatial understanding and world models. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Upon completion, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. The acquisition is expected to strengthen AMD’s AI-model research capabilities in robotics, simulation and three-dimensional applications.
SpaceX’s(SPCX) Starship reached Earth orbit for the first time and deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites, although an engine issue forced the mission to end early. The flight was Starship’s 14th test and its first successful orbital insertion. Originally scheduled to last about 10 hours, the mission was shortened to roughly three hours following the engine problem. Starship had already deployed Starlink V3 satellites during its 13th flight; the latest mission’s key achievements were reaching orbit for the first time and delivering 26 satellites to their target orbit.
Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, focusing on faster performance and lower costs for everyday tasks. The company said the new model runs more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30% less for most workloads. Sonnet 5.5 is designed for everyday coding, debugging, and creating documents, presentations and spreadsheets. It complements Opus 5.5, which is intended for open-ended tasks requiring more complex reasoning and sustained judgment.
