Reminder: Hong Kong Stock Market Closed on July 1 for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day
Wednesday, July 1, 2026, marks the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, with the Hong Kong stock market closed for the entire day.
The Stock Connect programs, including Southbound and Northbound trading, will also be suspended. Normal trading will resume on Thursday, July 2.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, also known as Hong Kong's Return Day or Hong Kong Return Festival, is observed annually on July 1 and is a statutory holiday in the Hong Kong region of China.
On July 1, 1997, the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China was officially established, ending over a century and a half of British colonial rule. This date has since been designated as a commemorative day.
