Capital One Q3 2026 Profit Reaches $3.5 Billion as Margin Widens
Capital One Financial reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $3.5 billion, driven by higher net interest income, expanding net margin, and robust revenue growth across its Consumer Banking and Credit Card segments. Pre-provision earnings rose 10% sequentially to $7.49 billion, supported by improved card credit performance and lower operating expenses. The company maintained a strong capital position with a common equity Tier 1 ratio of 13.8% and repurchased $2.6 billion in shares. However, integration costs related to Discover and Brex, potential macroeconomic volatility, and rising delinquencies remain key risks affecting future performance.
Capital One Financial reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $3.5 billion, or $5.61 per diluted common share, as a wider net interest margin and higher revenue lifted pre-provision earnings. Credit Card remained the largest earnings contributor, while Consumer Banking posted the strongest year-over-year revenue growth.
Adjusted diluted earnings were $6.69 per share. The non-GAAP figure excluded acquisition amortization expenses, Discover integration costs and Brex integration costs, which had combined after-tax effects of $1.08 per diluted share.
Pre-provision earnings rose 10% from the second quarter to $7.49 billion. Total net revenue was $16.34 billion, up from $15.85 billion in the prior quarter and $15.36 billion a year earlier, while non-interest expense declined sequentially to $8.86 billion from $9.04 billion.
Net interest income increased 4% both sequentially and year over year to $12.89 billion. Net interest margin expanded 40 basis points from the second quarter and 5 basis points from a year earlier to 8.41%. Capital One attributed the quarterly increase primarily to higher yields on card loans, lower average cash balances and a higher day count. Lower rates paid on retail deposits largely offset lower asset yields in the year-over-year comparison.
The company’s GAAP efficiency ratio was 54.19%, compared with 57.05% in the second quarter. The adjusted efficiency ratio was 48.76%, while the adjusted operating efficiency ratio was 38.99%.
Card credit performance supports results
Credit Card generated $12.15 billion of revenue, up 5% year over year, as purchase volume increased 11% to $254.68 billion. Period-end loans rose 2% to $276.36 billion. Pre-tax income was $3.79 billion, up 19% sequentially but down 1% from the prior-year quarter, as higher revenue was accompanied by a 9% increase in non-interest expense and a 5% rise in the provision for credit losses.
The segment’s net charge-off rate fell to 4.01% from 4.71% in the second quarter and 4.61% a year earlier. In Domestic Card, the net charge-off rate declined to 3.98%, though the 30-day-plus performing delinquency rate increased to 3.74% from 3.39% sequentially while remaining below 3.89% a year earlier.
Capital One recorded a companywide provision for credit losses of about $2.9 billion. Net charge-offs totaled $3.12 billion, and the allowance for credit losses declined by $225 million to $22.74 billion. The company said the reserve release was primarily driven by favorable credit performance in Domestic Card. The overall allowance coverage ratio decreased to 4.92% from 5.02% at the end of June.
Consumer Banking leads revenue growth
Consumer Banking revenue rose 17% year over year to $3.30 billion, while pre-tax income increased 34% to $741 million. Period-end loans grew 13% to $94.04 billion, supported by a 22% increase in auto loan originations to $13.10 billion.
The segment’s period-end deposits increased 3% year over year to $431.10 billion, and the average deposit interest rate declined 29 basis points to 2.78%. Global Payment Network volume reached $190.93 billion, up 25%. Consumer Banking’s net charge-off rate was 1.63%, compared with 1.58% a year earlier.
Commercial Banking reported $901 million of revenue, up 6% sequentially and roughly unchanged year over year. Pre-tax income increased 31% from the second quarter and 10% from a year earlier to $414 million. The segment recorded no net charge-offs during the quarter, while its provision for credit losses fell by $51 million sequentially to $20 million. Criticized performing loans represented 4.40% of period-end loans, and criticized nonperforming loans accounted for 1.22%, both lower than in the prior quarter and the year-earlier period.
Capital, liquidity and integration costs
Period-end loans held for investment increased 1% from the second quarter to $462.5 billion, while total deposits decreased 1% to $480.7 billion. Insured deposits were $408.1 billion, representing 85% of total deposits.
Capital One’s preliminary common equity Tier 1 ratio was 13.8% at September 30, up from 13.7% at the end of June. The company repurchased 12.6 million common shares for $2.6 billion during the quarter, bringing year-to-date repurchases to $7.9 billion. Tangible book value per share declined 2% sequentially to $102.72.
Average quarterly liquidity coverage was 163%, and total liquidity reserves stood at $133.8 billion, including $48.9 billion of cash and cash equivalents.
Third-quarter results included $483 million of acquisition amortization expenses, $338 million of Discover integration expenses and $47 million of Brex integration expenses. Capital One identified the Discover integration as a major source of uncertainty, including the possibility of higher-than-anticipated expenses, management distraction, employee attrition and delays in realizing expected benefits.
Other risks cited by the company included changes in the macroeconomic and interest-rate environment, higher credit losses and delinquencies, funding and liquidity pressures, regulatory changes, cybersecurity incidents, payment-network competition and merchant efforts to reduce transaction fees. Capital One noted that its third-quarter regulatory capital and liquidity metrics were preliminary and subject to change.
