Pre-WWDC Bombshell: 7 Years of Apple's AI Strategy Falter, from Poaching Google's Talent to Siri's Decline

TradingKey - Apple is unlikely to introduce a new version of Siri or any updates at next month's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), as revealed in a recent report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Despite the prior announcement of new features at last year's conference, these have been postponed indefinitely. The report highlights concerns from Apple's software chief, Craig Federighi, who has been hesitant to allocate substantial funds towards artificial intelligence due to a lack of confidence in the technology.

The postponed release of Apple Intelligence and the updated Siri underscores what many perceive as a failure in Apple's AI strategy. Last year's anticipated debut of Apple Intelligence fell short of expectations both in terms of timing and performance. Similarly, the updated Siri was found to be non-functional prior to its planned release.

Since poaching Google's AI leader, John Giannandrea, in 2018, Apple's AI advancements have struggled. Giannandrea has faced challenges integrating into Apple's long-established core team, hampering the implementation of its AI strategy. Federighi, who has remained skeptical about AI, viewed it as a peripheral feature with little return on investment, a stance that only shifted slightly after the emergence of ChatGPT in 2022. However, he still does not see companies like OpenAI as immediate threats. This sentiment is echoed by several senior executives at Apple.

Industry experts warn that ongoing setbacks in AI threaten Apple's market dominance, from the iPhone to future ventures in robotics and other products.

Apple is currently undergoing a structural reorganization, with Giannandrea losing control over Siri and related product development, although he will remain with the company. Apple is also exploring collaborations with AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Engineers are working on overhauling Siri's architecture to build a new system based on large language models. Acknowledging Siri's tarnished reputation, Apple plans to separate it from the Apple Intelligence brand in its marketing efforts.
