  • Japan's September trade shortfall reached JPY 536.6 billion, driven by slowing export and import growth.
  • Japan’s Finance Minister Katayama affirmed close coordination with the BoJ, targeting supply capacity growth without sparking inflation.
  • Markets weigh US inflation data alongside Fed Chair Warsh's neutral stance ahead of the October meeting.

USD/JPY gains ground after registering modest losses in the previous day, trading around 158.30 during Asian hours on Wednesday. The Japanese Yen (JPY) faces mounting challenges after the latest release of Japan's Ministry of Finance merchandise Trade Balance report.

Japan’s Trade Deficit widened significantly to JPY 536.6 billion in September, down from JPY 1,111.9 billion in August. This shortfall far exceeded market expectations of a JPY 181.0 billion deficit and marked the country's fifth consecutive monthly trade deficit.

Japan’s Imports grew by 18.9% year-on-year (YoY), a slowdown from August’s 28.0% surge and below the forecasted 19.6%, marking the slowest growth since May. Meanwhile, Exports rose by 16.7%, missing estimates of 20.1% and registering their slowest pace of growth in five months. Despite the overall deceleration in imports, crude oil imports jumped 51.1%, reflecting ongoing efforts by Japan to diversify its energy supply amid geopolitical tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

On the policy front, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated on Wednesday that the government is coordinating closely with the Bank of Japan (BoJ), emphasizing that there is no major divergence regarding the inflation outlook or monetary policy. She noted that while tax cuts boost demand and drive up prices, the government will ensure a proactive and responsible fiscal policy that expands Japan's supply capacity without accelerating inflation.

In the United States (US), recent economic data showed that US CPI inflation accelerated in September. However, markets continue to calibrate the Federal Reserve's (Fed) path forward following recent remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. Chair Warsh stated that he does not "prejudge" interest rate decisions, offering no clear signal on whether the central bank intends to hike or hold rates steady at its upcoming October policy meeting.

Technical Analysis:

In the daily chart, USD/JPY trades at 158.30. The pair holds a bullish near-term bias as spot remains above both the nine- and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), keeping the broader uptrend supported. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) around 54 suggests steady, non-overbought momentum, allowing buyers room to press the advance while the FXS Fed Sentiment Index at 127.51 hints at a still-supportive policy backdrop.

On the downside, initial support is located at the nine-day EMA at 158.20, followed by the 50-day EMA at 158.08, which together form a nearby demand zone underpinning the bullish structure. As long as USD/JPY holds above these moving averages, the technical bias would favor further upside extension, while a daily close below 158.08 would signal a loss of momentum and expose a deeper corrective phase.
