Trinity Capital (NYSE: TRIN) reported Q2 2026 total investment income of $87.2 million, up 25.5% year over year, while diluted net investment income per share was $0.51 versus $0.53 a year earlier. Record net investment income and a larger portfolio supported aggregate growth, but higher interest expense and a substantially larger share count limited the benefit on a per-share basis.

Core earnings data

Net investment income rose 32.1% to $46.0 million despite a $6.7 million increase in interest expense. Expenses and excise taxes excluding interest declined slightly to $16.4 million from $16.6 million, helped by lower professional fees and greater expense allocation to Trinity Capital’s investment adviser subsidiary.

The main divergence was between company-level and per-share results. Weighted average diluted shares increased to 90.5 million from 65.9 million, causing diluted NII per share to decline even as total NII reached a record.

Return on average equity was 15.2%, while return on average assets was 6.9%. A $0.8 million realized investment loss and $0.8 million of net unrealized investment depreciation reduced the amount by which net assets increased from operations.

Portfolio activity and credit quality

Trinity Capital ended June with an investment portfolio worth approximately $2.7 billion across 190 companies. It included about $2.0 billion of secured loans, $390.4 million of equipment financings, and $295.0 million of equity and warrant investments. First-lien loans represented 89.3% of the debt portfolio, and 81.5% of debt principal carried floating rates.

New commitments totaled $709.0 million, while gross investments funded reached $618.7 million. Of the funded amount, $296.3 million went to 11 new portfolio companies, $301.0 million to 25 existing companies, and $21.4 million to multi-sector holdings.

Exits and repayments totaled $378.3 million, including $220.2 million from early repayments and refinancings. Gross funding and repayment activity included $115.6 million of refinancings. The portfolio increased by $249.8 million, or 10.1%, on a cost basis and by $248.7 million, or 10.0%, on a fair-value basis from March 31.

The weighted average investment risk rating remained 3.0. Investments rated strong or very strong increased to a combined 52.9% of rated debt investments from 45.4% in the previous quarter, while the default/workout category declined to 0.8% from 1.1%. Loans to four companies and equipment financing to one company were on non-accrual status, with a combined fair value of $18.7 million, or 0.8% of debt investments at fair value.

Portfolio growth lifted income, but debt costs and dilution constrained per-share results

The 10.0% sequential increase in portfolio fair value coincided with 25.5% year-over-year growth in total investment income. Interest and dividend income increased to $79.6 million from $66.7 million, while fee and other income rose to $7.6 million from $2.8 million.

Growth did not come from a higher portfolio yield. The effective yield on average debt investments at cost declined to 15.0% from 15.7%. Trinity Capital notes that this yield includes fees and income acceleration from early repayments and other one-time events, making it sensitive to quarterly prepayment activity.

Financing and equity issuance also shaped the per-share outcome. Interest expense rose 37.3% because of higher weighted average debt outstanding, while the weighted average diluted share count grew slightly faster than total NII. As a result, aggregate NII increased by nearly one-third, but diluted NII per share fell by about 3.8%.

Liquidity, leverage, and NAV

Available liquidity was $430.1 million at quarter-end, consisting of $22.2 million in unrestricted cash and cash equivalents and $407.9 million in available capacity under the KeyBank credit facility. Net leverage increased to 118% from 115% at the end of March.

Trinity Capital sold 6.1 million shares through its at-the-market program during the quarter at a weighted average price of $16.39, raising $99.5 million in net proceeds. The company characterized these issuances as accretive, and NAV per share rose sequentially to $13.47 from $13.27. From July 1 through August 3, it issued another 662,575 shares and raised $11.6 million in net proceeds.

The board declared monthly distributions of $0.17 per share for July, August, and September, totaling $0.51 for the third quarter. This marked the 27th consecutive quarter with a consistent regular dividend.

Management perspective

CEO Kyle Brown attributed the quarter’s performance to Trinity Capital’s directly originated investments, diversification across five lending verticals, growing managed-funds platform, and internally managed structure. Management also emphasized selective underwriting and the ability to source and set terms on its own transactions rather than pursuing higher yields indiscriminately.

Risks investors should monitor

  • Financing costs and leverage: Interest expense grew 37.3% as weighted average debt outstanding increased, while net leverage rose to 118%. Continued growth in financing costs could reduce the earnings benefit from portfolio expansion.
  • Per-share dilution: ATM issuance added capital and supported NAV, but weighted average shares increased faster than total NII during the quarter, contributing to lower NII per share.
  • Yield and repayment variability: The effective debt yield declined by 70 basis points. Early repayments and one-time income accelerations can also cause reported yields and investment income to fluctuate between quarters.
  • Portfolio credit marks: Non-accrual investments remained limited at 0.8% of the debt portfolio, but debt investments recorded $10.6 million of unrealized depreciation. Future changes in credit quality could affect NAV and operating results.

Summary

Trinity Capital expanded its portfolio and generated record total net investment income in Q2 2026, supported by higher interest, dividend, and fee income. The central issue for investors is whether portfolio growth can translate into stronger per-share earnings as financing costs, leverage, and the share count rise. Credit ratings remained stable overall, while effective yield, non-accrual exposure, and future ATM issuance are important areas to monitor.
