TradingKey – In a politically charged cyberattack, the hacker group Gonjeshke Darande has reportedly destroyed the stolen funds from Iran’s crypto exchange Nobitex, stating the act was symbolic rather than profit-driven.
On Thursday, June 19, Nobitex issued its fourth official statement on X, estimating losses of $100 million but assuring users that the situation is under control. The exchange confirmed that hot wallet funds have been moved to secure storage, and pledged that all user losses will be fully covered by its reserve fund, ensuring no customer will suffer financial damage.
The Israeli-affiliated hacker group, also known as “Predatory Sparrow,” claimed responsibility for the attack and posted on X that it had burned $90 million worth of crypto assets, including BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, and DOGE, by sending them to irretrievable “black hole” addresses.
Unlike typical financially motivated hacks, this attack appears to be politically symbolic. According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, Gonjeshke Darande deliberately rendered the stolen assets inaccessible as a form of protest, not for monetary gain.
