FAQs
What is the TradingKey holiday market-closure calendar? How does it help traders in practice?
The holiday market-closure calendar is designed to show the closure, early close, and trading resumption schedules of major global stock exchanges, such as the NYSE, Nasdaq, London Stock Exchange, Tokyo Stock Exchange, and Hong Kong Stock Exchange, as well as foreign exchange and commodity markets such as CME gold and crude oil, during public holidays.
Because financial markets are globally connected, the closure of a core market can directly change global capital flows and market positioning. With the holiday calendar, traders can adjust positions in advance, avoid the risk of being unable to close positions due to market closures, or use time differences across markets to develop specific holding strategies.
Can a country's currency, such as in the forex market, still be traded when that country is on a public holiday?
Yes, it can still be traded, but the market environment changes. The foreign exchange market, or Forex, is a 24-hour decentralized over-the-counter (OTC) market. For example, when the United States is on the Thanksgiving holiday, U.S.-based banks and non-bank liquidity providers (LPs) are closed, but banks in Europe, Asia, and Australia are still open.
