Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai Buys 720,000 Shares for About HK$81.7 Million

Alibaba Group Chairman Joe Tsai purchased 720,000 shares of the Chinese e-commerce giant on Aug. 25, according to a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Tsai bought the shares through a corporation he controls at an average price of HK$113.4668 apiece, implying a total transaction value of about HK$81.7 million.

Following the purchase, Tsai's disclosed long position in Alibaba increased to 275.40 million shares from 274.68 million shares. His stake in the company rose to 1.44% from 1.43%, according to the filing.

Tsai's disclosed interests include shares held as a beneficial owner, through controlled corporations, through a discretionary trust and through his spouse. His largest interest, totaling about 262.36 million shares, is held through corporations controlled by him.

The filing also shows that Tsai holds unvested restricted share units in Alibaba, including 63,334 units with an exercise period running through April 2031 and another 112,500 units with an exercise period through April 2030.

The latest purchase marks another increase in Tsai's disclosed Alibaba holdings and comes as the company's shares trade around the HK$110 level.
