BlackLine Q3 Revenue Rises 8% as Operating Margin Reaches 26%
BlackLine reported third-quarter revenue of $193.4 million, an 8% year-over-year increase, alongside a 26% non-GAAP operating margin meeting top-end targets. Annual recurring revenue reached $735 million with a 14% growth in remaining performance obligations. Profitability expanded as GAAP net income rose to $10.6 million and non-GAAP net income reached $44.7 million, supported by a 30% free cash flow margin. Strategic initiatives focus on platform-based pricing adoption, artificial intelligence innovations like Verity AI, and expansion within a $45 billion addressable market. Key risks include economic uncertainty, customer renewal rates, and execution of platform transitions.
BlackLine Inc. reported higher third-quarter revenue and recurring business volume while posting a 26% non-GAAP operating margin, placing profitability at the top end of its three-to-five-year target framework. The finance and accounting software provider also generated a 30% free cash flow margin as it continued shifting customers toward platform-based pricing and investing in artificial intelligence products.
Revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, rose 8% year over year to $193.4 million. Annual recurring revenue, defined as contracted recurring subscription and support revenue normalized to one year, increased 7% to $735 million. Remaining performance obligations grew 14% to $1.1 billion, while net revenue retention was 103.5%.
On a GAAP basis, operating income reached $16.7 million, compared with $7.6 million a year earlier. GAAP net income attributable to BlackLine was $10.6 million, up from $5.3 million in the prior-year quarter.
Non-GAAP operating income rose to $50.1 million from $38.1 million, lifting the corresponding margin to 25.9% from 21.4%. Non-GAAP net income increased to $44.7 million, representing a 23.1% margin, compared with $37.6 million and a 21.1% margin a year earlier. The non-GAAP gross margin was 79.7%, broadly consistent with 79.4% in the prior-year period.
Free cash flow totaled $57.5 million, up from $57.0 million a year earlier, with the margin declining slightly to 29.7% from 32.0% because of the higher revenue base. Over the 12 months ended September 30, BlackLine generated $150 million of free cash flow on $748 million of revenue, equal to a 20% margin.
Platform pricing and customer expansion
BlackLine said platform pricing accounted for 23% of eligible ARR in the third quarter, up from 11% in the first quarter of 2025. Eligible ARR excludes SAP solutions-extension revenue and the public sector. The company expects paid user counts to decrease as it signs new customers and moves existing customers from user-based contracts to platform pricing.
The company had 733 customers generating at least $250,000 in ARR, including 98 generating $1 million or more. Enterprise customers represented about half of BlackLine’s customer base but approximately 75% of ARR, while mid-market customers accounted for roughly half of customers and 25% of ARR. Public-sector operations remained below 1% of both customers and ARR.
BlackLine identified new customers, expansion within existing accounts, partner relationships, international and public-sector markets, platform packaging, adjacent products and AI monetization as potential growth levers. Its strategic focus remains on record-to-report and invoice-to-cash automation, markets that the company estimates represent a combined $45 billion opportunity.
AI investment and longer-term targets
Management presented Verity AI and the Finance Control Console as central components of BlackLine’s product strategy. The company is developing AI agents for processes including account reconciliation, accruals, transaction matching, financial reporting and collections. Results cited from selected early adopters were described as preliminary and may not represent broader customer outcomes.
BlackLine’s three-to-five-year target framework calls for annual revenue growth of 13% to 16%, a non-GAAP gross margin of about 85% and a non-GAAP operating margin of 26% to 30%. The framework assumes contributions from go-to-market execution, strategic products, partnerships, platform pricing, AI-driven innovation and public-sector expansion, along with infrastructure, cloud and operating efficiencies. It is a longer-term model rather than specific guidance for the next quarter or fiscal year.
The company cautioned that future results depend on its ability to win new customers, expand sales to existing customers and maintain subscription renewals and user growth. Economic uncertainty, unfavorable industry or global conditions, execution of technology and platform initiatives, and the performance of strategic relationships, including its SAP partnership, could also cause actual results to differ from management’s expectations.
