Albemarle Q3 Adjusted EBITDA Jumps on Lithium Pricing
Albemarle Corp. posted strong third-quarter 2026 results, driven by higher lithium pricing and robust Energy Storage performance. Net sales rose 19% year over year to $1.55 billion, and net income reached $297 million, reversing prior-year losses. Adjusted EBITDA surged 186% to $646 million, bolstered by over $150 million in annualized cost savings. The company lowered its full-year capital expenditure forecast to $300 million–$350 million. While maintaining its scenario-based outlook, Albemarle highlighted risks from commodity price volatility, geopolitical conflicts, and supply-chain disruptions, projecting softer sequential fourth-quarter earnings amid declining market pricing.
Albemarle Corp. (ALB) reported a sharp increase in third-quarter 2026 earnings as higher lithium pricing lifted its Energy Storage business, while stronger Specialties results and cost reductions provided additional support. The company also lowered its full-year capital expenditure forecast to $300 million-$350 million from about $500 million, citing capital-efficiency improvements and the resequencing of early-stage project spending.
Net sales rose 19% year over year to $1.55 billion. Net income attributable to Albemarle was $297 million, compared with a $161 million loss a year earlier, while diluted earnings per common share were $2.15 versus a loss of $1.72.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 186% to $646 million, and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 42% from 17%. Adjusted diluted earnings were $2.58 per share, compared with an adjusted loss of $0.19 per share in the prior-year quarter.
The company generated $406 million of operating cash flow and $325 million of free cash flow during the quarter. Operating cash flow conversion was 63%, within Albemarle’s long-term target range of 60% to 70%. Year-to-date free cash flow reached $1.2 billion.
Albemarle said it had achieved more than $150 million in annualized cost and productivity improvements through the first nine months of 2026, reaching the high end of its full-year target. The gains came from manufacturing efficiencies, incremental volume and yield, and supply-chain and back-office actions.
Lithium pricing drives Energy Storage earnings
Energy Storage net sales increased 58% to $1.12 billion, while adjusted EBITDA rose 351% to $560 million. The segment’s adjusted EBITDA margin reached 50%, up 32.5 percentage points from the prior-year period, primarily reflecting higher lithium pricing.
Third-quarter sales volume was 56,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent, or LCE, at an average realized price of $20.02 per kilogram. The average lithium market price during the quarter was $19.73 per kilogram.
Albemarle continues to expect full-year Energy Storage sales volume of 225,000 to 235,000 metric tons LCE. A delay in the ramp-up of the Greenbushes CGP3 project is expected to be partly offset by better-than-planned production at Wodgina. CGP3 restarted on Aug. 1 and achieved 30 days of nameplate performance in September.
For the fourth quarter, the company expects Energy Storage sales and adjusted EBITDA to decline sequentially because of lower market pricing, with sales volumes expected to remain steady. Margins are also expected to decrease as the company processes higher-cost spodumene inventory purchased in earlier periods.
Approximately 40% of expected 2026 lithium salts volume, equivalent to about one-third of total Energy Storage volume, is covered by long-term agreements. Those contracts are linked to market indices, generally carry a three-month pricing lag and include price floors, with some also containing ceilings.
Specialties outlook supported by pricing and demand
Specialties net sales increased 13% to $389 million as both pricing and volume improved. Adjusted EBITDA rose 31% to $99 million, and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 3.5 percentage points to 25%.
The segment benefited from cost and productivity actions as well as record quarterly production at Jordan Bromine Company. Albemarle said demand and consumer confidence remained resilient through the year to date, led by semiconductor and electronics applications and strong demand for clear brine fluids.
The company expects full-year Specialties sales of $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $350 million to $375 million, with a low-20% adjusted EBITDA margin. Albemarle increased the segment’s adjusted EBITDA outlook based on year-to-date performance and cost actions that more than offset supply-chain cost escalation.
Its fourth-quarter assumptions call for steady demand in core Specialties markets while incorporating effects from the situation in the Middle East. About 20% of segment sales track bromine market pricing in China, leaving results partly exposed to regional price movements.
2026 outlook remains tied to lithium prices
Albemarle maintained its scenario-based total-company outlook. Under a roughly $20-per-kilogram lithium market price scenario, it projects 2026 net sales of $5.7 billion to $6.0 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA margin in the low-40% range. The company said year-to-date performance had trended toward the high end of that scenario.
The outlook incorporates higher Wodgina volume, the impact of the CGP3 outage and productivity improvements. Those improvements are expected to offset approximately $70 million to $90 million of otherwise unmitigated raw-material and supply-chain costs associated with the Middle East situation.
The reduced capital spending forecast includes less than $300 million of sustaining capital in 2026. Albemarle said it is optimizing project timing and scope while preserving flexibility for future growth investments at Greenbushes, Wodgina and Salar de Atacama.
Market indicators cited by the company showed global lithium consumption increasing 48% year over year through August, compared with 34% growth in supply. Energy Storage Systems battery production rose 97%, while electric-vehicle sales measured in gigawatt-hours increased 11%. Albemarle said battery producer order books remained solid for the first half of 2027, although less than 5% of current stationary-storage demand was directly tied to data-center installations.
Results and the outlook remain sensitive to lithium and bromine prices, customer orders, production volumes, contract terms, raw-material and energy costs, foreign exchange movements and project execution. Albemarle also identified trade restrictions, tariffs, geopolitical conflict and associated supply-chain disruption as uncertainties that could cause actual performance to differ from its scenario-based expectations.
