Materion Raises 2026 EPS Guidance After Record Q3 Sales
Materion Corporation raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $7.10–$7.40, driven by record third-quarter value-added sales of $313.7 million and a 37% jump in adjusted EPS to $1.93. Growth was led by surging semiconductor, aerospace and defense, and telecom demand, alongside margin expansion and a 35% increase in backlog. All three business segments posted double-digit sales gains, bolstered by strong free cash flow and a reduced net leverage ratio of 1.5x. However, management noted potential macroeconomic, operational, and geopolitical risks that could impact the forward-looking outlook.
Materion Corporation (MTRN) raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings guidance after reporting record third-quarter value-added sales and adjusted earnings, supported by all-time-high semiconductor revenue and continued strength in aerospace and defense and telecom and data center markets.
The advanced materials company now expects adjusted earnings per share of $7.10 to $7.40 for 2026, representing growth of about 33% from 2025 at the midpoint. Materion also expects full-year value-added sales to increase by a high-teens percentage year over year and said it is positioned for a significant sequential increase in the fourth quarter.
For the third quarter, value-added sales rose 19% to a record $313.7 million from $263.9 million a year earlier. The measure excludes the pass-through cost of certain metals to reduce the effect of commodity-price movements on sales comparisons.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 27% to $70.7 million, while the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 150 basis points to 22.5%. Materion attributed the improvement primarily to higher volumes and favorable price and product mix. Adjusted EPS climbed 37% to a record $1.93 from $1.41. On a GAAP basis, net income was $38.3 million, compared with $25.4 million in the prior-year quarter.
Semiconductor and defense demand lead growth
Semiconductor value-added sales jumped 40% to a quarterly record of $93.3 million, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Materion said market expansion and new business wins supported the result.
Aerospace and defense sales increased 42% to $67.5 million, with double-digit growth across defense, space and commercial aerospace. Telecom and data center sales rose 71% to $15.3 million, the strongest quarterly performance for that market since 2019, as data center and grid investment increased.
Industrial sales gained 8% to $41.7 million, while automotive sales rose 11% to $15 million, partly reflecting order timing. Consumer electronics sales declined 3% to $49.1 million because of precision clad strip timing, although they increased 2% sequentially. Energy sales fell 3% to $13.1 million, also due to order timing.
All three segments post double-digit sales growth
Performance Materials generated value-added sales of $178.7 million, up 14%, driven primarily by market growth and new business in aerospace and defense, telecom and data center, and industrial applications. Adjusted EBITDA increased 12% to $42.6 million, as higher volume and pricing were partly offset by mix. The segment’s adjusted EBITDA margin narrowed to 23.8% from 24.2%.
Materion expects a meaningful fourth-quarter sales increase in Performance Materials, supported by large incoming defense orders and continued order momentum across other end markets.
Electronic Materials delivered value-added sales of $103.4 million, a 30% increase. Organic sales reached a record as semiconductor demand and new business wins supported growth. Segment adjusted EBITDA rose 54% to a record $33.2 million, and the margin expanded 500 basis points to 32.1%. Management expects strong fourth-quarter sales and earnings from sustained semiconductor performance and contributions from new business.
Precision Optics reported value-added sales of $31.6 million, up 17% and the highest quarterly level since 2021. Adjusted EBITDA advanced 72% to $5.5 million, with the margin expanding 560 basis points to 17.4%. The company expects continued top- and bottom-line improvement in the fourth quarter.
Backlog and cash flow support fourth-quarter outlook
Materion ended the quarter with record backlog, up about 35% from a year earlier and approximately 25% since the beginning of 2026. Year-to-date incoming orders increased about 25% to a new high. Orders rose roughly 90% in telecom and data center, 35% in aerospace and defense, 30% in semiconductor and 25% in industrial markets.
Defense incoming orders reached a record of about $140 million year to date, while open requests for quotation exceeded $500 million.
Free cash flow was approximately $46 million in the quarter, representing conversion of 120%. Total debt declined to $397 million from $457 million a year earlier, while net debt fell to $381.6 million from $440.6 million. The ratio of net debt to trailing-12-month adjusted EBITDA improved to 1.5 times, the low end of Materion’s target range of 1.5 to 3 times. The company had approximately $276 million available under its revolving credit facility and recorded no share repurchases during the quarter, while continuing to prioritize organic investment.
Materion’s 2026 planning assumptions include $70 million of capital expenditures, $25 million for mine development and new pit openings, $28 million of interest expense, and an effective tax rate of 13% to 14%.
The outlook remains subject to risks including economic conditions, inflation, tariffs and trade agreements, government shutdowns, end-market demand, product mix, customer financial health, raw-material costs and availability, project execution, currency and interest-rate movements, regulatory changes, litigation and geopolitical disruptions. Materion also said it cannot reconcile its adjusted earnings guidance to a comparable GAAP range without unreasonable effort because some potential adjustments depend on future events that cannot currently be estimated.
