Greenlight Re Returns to Q3 Profit as Innovations Premiums Jump
Greenlight Capital Re returned to a third-quarter net income of $3.2 million in 2026, rebounding from a prior-year loss, supported by profitable underwriting and a 46.4% jump in Innovations segment premiums. The combined ratio rose to 90.5%. While Open Market premiums declined due to targeted reductions, the segment remained solidly profitable. Nine-month net income fell to $9.4 million, and the Solasglas investment fund produced a flat year-to-date return. Fully diluted book value per share increased to $20.78. Management highlighted ongoing share repurchases and plans for Lloyd’s Syndicate 3456 to transition to full-syndicate status in 2027, while noting risks from catastrophes and market volatility.
Greenlight Capital Re, Ltd. (NASDAQ: GLRE) returned to a quarterly profit in the third quarter of 2026 as underwriting remained profitable and premiums from its Innovations segment jumped 46.4%, partly offsetting a planned contraction in its Open Market portfolio.
The reinsurer reported net income of $3.2 million, or a 0.5% return on equity, compared with a $4.4 million loss and a negative 0.7% return on equity a year earlier. Net underwriting income declined to $14.6 million from $22.3 million, while the combined ratio rose to 90.5% from 86.6%. A ratio below 100% indicates an underwriting profit.
Gross premiums written slipped 1.4% to $181.9 million from $184.4 million. Management said the quarter benefited from a relatively benign environment for catastrophes and large losses, while reserves established in the previous quarter for Middle East-related exposures developed favorably.
Innovations growth offsets Open Market contraction
Open Market gross premiums written fell to $139 million from $155 million, reflecting targeted portfolio actions and the non-renewal of certain casualty business during 2025 and 2026. Despite the lower volume, the segment remained solidly profitable, with an 87.9% combined ratio compared with 84.5% a year earlier. Its loss ratio improved to 51.2% from 53.0%, but higher acquisition and underwriting expense ratios more than offset that benefit.
The company said its 2025 financial-strength rating upgrade to “A” from A.M. Best continued to support portfolio underwriting opportunities in the Open Market segment.
Innovations gross premiums written increased to $43 million from $29 million. The segment’s quarterly combined ratio was 98.2%, up from 96.8% a year earlier, as a higher loss ratio outweighed lower acquisition and underwriting expense ratios.
For the first nine months, however, the Innovations combined ratio improved by 2.9 percentage points to 96.7%. Nine-month premiums rose to $122 million from $84 million. Greenlight Re maintains a whole-account quota-share arrangement on the segment’s underwriting portfolio, providing third-party rated capacity.
The Innovations platform had more than 45 active portfolio companies and approximately $65 million of investments at carrying value. Greenlight Re said more than 95% of the segment’s gross premiums written carried net limit exposure below $2 million, reflecting its use of smaller line sizes, third-party capital and reinsurance. The company also disclosed a strategic partnership with Hippo for additional U.S. admitted capacity and co-investments.
Nine-month earnings decline
For the first nine months of 2026, gross premiums written decreased 3.1% to $592.9 million from $612.0 million. Net underwriting income declined to $20.6 million from $22.6 million, and the combined ratio edged up to 95.6% from 95.4%.
Nine-month net income was $9.4 million, down from $25.6 million, while return on equity fell to 1.3% from 3.7%. Management said the year-to-date underwriting result was trending in line with its expectations following favorable development of the Middle East-related reserves.
Solasglas Investments, LP, the value-oriented investment fund managed by DME Advisors for Greenlight Re and its affiliates, produced a 0.0% year-to-date return through October. The investment portfolio represented about 70% of Greenlight Re’s adjusted surplus. The presentation noted that past investment performance is not indicative of future results.
Book value, capital and 2027 plans
Non-GAAP fully diluted book value per share reached $20.78 at September 30, up from $18.90 a year earlier and $20.61 at the end of the second quarter. GAAP basic book value per share was $21.40. Shareholders’ equity totaled $694.5 million, compared with $658.9 million a year earlier, while total debt leverage stood at 1%.
Greenlight Re repurchased 504,829 shares for $8.0 million during the third quarter at an average price of $15.77. It bought a further 220,352 shares for $3.3 million in October. Through October 30, the company had repurchased 5.4% of its outstanding shares for $30.5 million during 2026.
The company expects Lloyd’s Syndicate 3456 to transition to full-syndicate status on January 1, 2027, following approval by the Lloyd’s Council. Greenlight Re said the change will broaden the syndicate’s business plan beyond Innovations-related activity and expand its gross-premium capacity in 2027.
The company cautioned that its outlook remains exposed to catastrophe losses, the performance of Solasglas, potential rating changes, the loss of major brokers and regulatory or licensing actions. It also noted that the carrying values of private investments made through its Innovations platform could differ significantly from values determined on a fair-value basis.
