Adtran Q3 Revenue Flat as Optical Growth Offsets Carrier Weakness
Adtran Holdings reported flat third-quarter 2026 revenue of $281.2 million, as optical networking and hyperscale data-center growth offset weaker service-provider demand. Non-GAAP diluted earnings rose to $0.09 per share, and non-GAAP gross margin improved sequentially to 42.1%. However, working-capital requirements drove negative free cash flow of $39.4 million, reducing cash reserves to $64.6 million. For the fourth quarter of 2026, Adtran projects revenue between $272 million and $292 million. Key risks include debt covenant compliance, shifting customer spending, component inflation, and internal control weaknesses.
Adtran Holdings reported nearly flat third-quarter revenue as growth in optical networking, hyperscale data-center interconnect and European access products offset weaker purchases from service-provider customers. Profitability improved sequentially, but working-capital requirements drove sharply negative free cash flow and reduced the company’s cash balance.
Revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, was $281.2 million, compared with $279.4 million a year earlier and $281.1 million in the second quarter. Optical networking solutions generated $114.5 million, rising 11% year over year and 4% sequentially, led by hyperscalers and large U.S. service providers. Adtran said demand reflected transport-capacity expansion, cloud wholesale connectivity and hyperscale data-center interconnect.
Hyperscale revenue increased by more than 200% from a year earlier. The company expects customer trials of its LiteWave 800 product to begin in the first half of 2027, followed by production scaling in the second half. Its MicroMux Quattro remains scheduled for release in the first half of 2027.
Access and aggregation revenue rose 5% year over year to $78.5 million but fell 10% from the second quarter. European access sales recorded a fourth consecutive sequential increase, while U.S. results were affected by the timing of customer purchases. Adtran identified multi-gigabit upgrades and support from the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program as demand drivers.
Subscriber solutions revenue declined 13% year over year to $88.1 million, although it increased 4% sequentially as Carrier Ethernet sales improved. The company also reported growth in U.S. optical network terminals tied to XGS-PON upgrades and said it expects residential customer-premises equipment demand to strengthen in the fourth quarter.
Customer diversification offsets carrier weakness
Revenue from enterprise, government and cloud customers increased 44% year over year to $78.6 million and represented 28% of total revenue, up from 19.5% a year earlier. Growth was driven by hyperscale data-center interconnect and secure networking for enterprise and government customers. Excluding hyperscalers, revenue from the group increased 20%.
By contrast, large service-provider revenue was flat sequentially and down 4% year over year at $101.3 million. Regional service-provider revenue fell 15% to $101.2 million, primarily because of lower U.S. access purchases.
Adtran’s non-GAAP gross margin was 42.1%, unchanged from a year earlier and up from 40.7% in the second quarter. The quarterly result included an approximately two-percentage-point benefit from a tariff-cost refund. Product and customer mix, tighter supply and component inflation remained headwinds, and the company expects a much smaller tariff-refund benefit in the fourth quarter. Management said product-cost savings and pricing adjustments are underway.
Non-GAAP operating income declined to $14.1 million from $15.1 million a year earlier, while the corresponding margin narrowed to 5.0% from 5.4%. Sequentially, operating income increased by $3.5 million and the margin expanded by 120 basis points. Non-GAAP operating expenses were $104.2 million, compared with $102.4 million a year earlier, as Adtran continued investing in next-generation optical products and AI-driven software while managing inflationary pressure.
Non-GAAP diluted earnings were $0.09 per share, up from $0.05 a year earlier and $0.04 in the second quarter. On a GAAP basis, Adtran recorded an operating loss of $754,000 and a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $8.2 million, or $0.10 per diluted share.
Cash flow pressured by working capital
Free cash flow was negative $39.4 million, consisting of $24.5 million in operating cash outflow and $14.9 million in capital expenditures and purchases of developed technologies. That compared with positive free cash flow of $8.7 million in the second quarter and negative $4.8 million a year earlier.
Cash declined to $64.6 million from $79 million at the end of the second quarter, with an additional $7.1 million held as restricted cash. Days sales outstanding increased to 77 from 67 because of billing and collection timing. Receivables and inventory increased during the quarter, partly offset by higher payables. Inventory stood at $227.4 million, while accounts payable totaled $179.0 million. Adtran said past-due balances declined sequentially and expects cash conversion to improve in the fourth quarter.
Fourth-quarter outlook
For the fourth quarter of 2026, Adtran expects revenue of $272 million to $292 million and a non-GAAP operating margin of 1% to 5%. The company did not provide a GAAP reconciliation for its margin guidance because it said certain adjustments cannot be predicted without unreasonable effort.
Management remains committed to a long-term non-GAAP operating-margin target of 10%, supported by optical networking, enterprise demand, replacement of high-risk vendors and expense discipline. Its stated growth priorities also include AI and cloud infrastructure, fiber-network expansion and quantum-safe networking for critical infrastructure.
Key uncertainties identified by Adtran include its ability to comply with debt covenants and payment obligations, its indebtedness and cash-generation capacity, shifting service-provider spending, inventory management, component and tariff pressures, international operations, cybersecurity threats and ongoing material weaknesses in internal control over financial reporting.
