Fed’s Cook says inflation has stayed too high for too long
The Fed Governor Lisa Cook crossed the wires on Wednesday and said she is committed to returning inflation to the Fed’s 2% goal while preserving the strength of the labour market.
She added that “inflation has been too long,” in a conference in North Caroline. Cook’s remarks came after the headline and core PCE figures for August were reported unchanged from the previous month.
Cook’s comments barely moved the needle regarding expectations of interest rate hikes by the Fed. After the bulk of US data was released earlier, money markets see nearly a 62% chance that the US central bank will keep rates on hold, while there’s a 38% chance of a 25-basis-point increase, according to Prime Terminal
