AEye Q2 2026 Earnings: Revenue Grows Ninefold but Net Loss Widens
AEye (Nasdaq: LIDR) reported Q2 2026 revenue of $202,000, about 9.2 times the $22,000 recorded a year earlier, while GAAP diluted loss per share narrowed to $0.22 from $0.48. The underlying loss picture was less favorable: GAAP net loss widened to $10.0 million, and quarterly cash consumption was $7.5 million. Commercial engagement reached new highs, but revenue remained small relative to the company’s cost base.
Core earnings data
Revenue approximately doubled from the previous quarter and increased for a fourth consecutive quarter. First-half revenue reached $303,000, exceeding AEye’s revenue for all of 2025, according to the company.
However, cost of revenue remained above revenue, and higher operating expenses contributed to wider GAAP and non-GAAP losses. Dollar amounts below are in thousands except per-share data.
| Metric | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Year-over-year change |

Business and commercial performance
AEye said its revenue mix is beginning to shift from paid evaluations toward commercial agreements. It had 25 customers receiving revenue-generating shipments, up 19% since its Q1 update, while commercial engagements and quotes increased more than 25% and approximately 40% sequentially, respectively. The company also recorded revenue from its first contract-development engagement, adding a second revenue source.
Defense remained AEye’s most active vertical. Defense engagements doubled from the previous quarter, and the lead defense customer placed a third consecutive paid order as Apollo was evaluated for UAV, UGV and counter-UAS applications.
AEye also entered sports analytics through an agreement with Alive3D. Elsewhere, Apollo was validated on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, the company remained involved in multiple Level 3 and Level 4 automotive evaluations, and OPTIS installations continued operating in the Bay Area and around Detroit. These developments expand the commercial pipeline, although the release did not disclose revenue attached to most of them.
A larger share count narrowed EPS despite a wider net loss
The improvement in per-share losses did not reflect lower total losses. AEye’s weighted-average diluted share count increased to 45.9 million from 19.1 million, an increase of approximately 140%. That larger denominator allowed GAAP loss per share to narrow to $0.22 even as the net loss increased to $10.0 million.
Stock-based compensation also rose to $2.4 million from $1.2 million and was the largest adjustment between GAAP and non-GAAP results. During the first half, AEye received $1.98 million in proceeds from common stock purchase agreements and recorded $1.23 million of net financing cash inflow.
Profitability, cash flow and the balance sheet
Cost of revenue was $363,000 against revenue of $202,000, producing a $161,000 gross loss. The implied gross margin was approximately negative 80%, an improvement from approximately negative 391% a year earlier, but the small revenue base makes these percentages volatile and the business has not yet reached positive gross profit.
Operating expenses increased across all major categories. Research and development expense rose about 29% to $4.7 million, sales and marketing nearly doubled to $1.1 million, and general and administrative expense increased about 8% to $4.7 million.
AEye used $15.8 million of operating cash during the first six months of 2026, compared with $14.2 million in the prior-year period. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $71.5 million on June 30, down approximately $15.0 million from the combined balance at the end of 2025. The balance sheet included only $146,000 of convertible-note debt, supporting management’s description of the company as virtually debt-free.
2026 cash consumption guidance
AEye reaffirmed its full-year cash consumption outlook rather than raising or lowering it. Management believes the current liquidity position provides an operational runway well into 2028, although that assessment depends on spending remaining consistent with its outlook.
| Metric | Latest guidance | Previous guidance | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-year 2026 cash consumption | $30 million to $35 million, including approximately $5 million of working capital | $30 million to $35 million | Reaffirmed |
Risks investors should watch
- Pipeline conversion: Customer shipments, engagements and quotes are increasing, but quarterly revenue was still only $202,000. Evaluations, validations and memoranda of understanding may not become production contracts or recurring revenue.
- Negative gross profit: Cost of revenue continued to exceed revenue. AEye must improve revenue scale and economics before commercial growth can support its operating cost base.
- Continued cash consumption: The company expects to consume $30 million to $35 million in 2026. Higher working-capital needs or product-ramp spending could shorten the runway described by management.
- Share dilution: The weighted-average share count increased substantially year over year, making per-share losses appear better despite a wider net loss. Additional equity financing could further increase the share count.
Summary
AEye’s Q2 2026 results showed expanding commercial activity and rapid revenue growth from a very small base, including repeat defense orders and a shift toward commercial and contract-development revenue. At the same time, negative gross profit, rising expenses and wider total losses show that commercial traction has not yet translated into financial scale. The main points to monitor are the conversion of evaluations into recurring orders, progress toward positive gross profit and whether cash consumption remains within the reaffirmed range.
